When I changed the aft companion way hatch I had to enlarge the turtle.
I cut it down the middle, reinforced it underneath and filled in the
join. I did not spend a great amount of time fairing. Today I finished
painting with Quantum 99 and Kiwigrip non skid. Its good enough for
government work.
It might be the trauma suffered over 24 years in the Irish Navy where the motto appeared to be "if it moves, salute it, if it doesn't move, paint it." I hate the prep work, I hate the application but most of all I hate paying someone a ton of money to do a so-so job. Sure, if I was prepared to pay out $$$$$$ I could get a yard to spray Awlgrip and have a lovely paint job. But its still a 40 year old boat, with all the wear and tear that goes with that.

If I was in a location with reasonably priced labor, like Sea Biscuit, I would probably spring to have a crew spray the hull. If I go this route I would still favor Quantum 99 over Awlgrip due to repair-ability.

The options most of us DIY types have are;

1. Get a local painter to roll and tip Awlgrip. I have seen some lovely work. More often, I've seen lots of "adequate" work. The price difference is not huge, its a bit of a crap shoot. Awlgrip cannot be sanded out to remove imperfections or repaired afterwards. My "ballpark" for a good painter in Miami is about $10K for the deck alone and I think that's on the low side.

2. Paint with Interlux two part, or similar. I don't think this is long lasting enough to justify the time and effort involved.

Then along came Quantum 99 paints. Read the history here; http://quantumpaint.com/about-us/

Today I went to a seminar in Forth Lauderdale taught my Jon Boswell. It was attended by a group of professional painters for the area. I kept my head down (yes I know, not easy for me) and watched them spray paint. Impressive, but I think they are the wrong audience for this product. I believe that some yards are using it but the change over from Awlgrip or Awlcraft won't be led by the shooters. As the customer pays for the paint why should the risk learning new tricks and probably botch a job in the process. This is why Awlgrip has been around since 1973.

My interest was in rolling this paint. (Note: tipping is not necessary or recommended). Here are some photos;

My first attempt at rolling on this paint. I'm sure I'll get better.

My second attempt. Getting better might take some time.

A few points;

1. This paint goes a LONG way. Don't compere it gallon to gallon with Awlgrip. Jon stated that 2 gallons painted a 50ft Beneteau hull. You have to roll most of the paint off the roller and really stretch it out on the surface. The last roll should be in one direction and light.

2. You can overcoat in 3 hours but better to wait overnight and sand out imperfections. Did I mention that you can sand and repair this paint.

3. It contains more solids that Awlgrip.

4. I will definitely use the Quantum 45 Epoxy primer on the deck, first.

5. I will still probably use Kiwigrip for the non skid.

I'm not saying that my deck with look as good as your sprayed Awlgrip, but I may have 10 cases of good single malt in my bilge, bought with the money saved, to ease the shame and embarrassment.

I like teak but I don't like maintaining it. The sliding turtle companionway hatches were is pretty poor shape and need replacing. From previous posts you can see that I came up with a solution and I was pretty happy with it. Then along came Ebay and provided a SS sliding companionway hatch. It was too wide but a trip to Samuel the welder took care of that. If anyone is familiar with Hylas yachts, it is identical to the ones they use. I'm pretty sure they are made in-house and not available off the shelf.

I took the opportunity to replace and rebed the aluminum side tracks that hold the hatch to the deck.

Total draw 6 amps. (12v).

9 LED only, total draw 2.2 amps (12v).

The traditional Alpenglow still draw approx .8 amp each but I like the mellow light. As they fail I will convert the fitting over to LED.
I, like all prudent sailors, carry out an engine room inspection every two hours, while motoring. Well..., kind of, sorta, when I not seasick, tired etc.. I always check when I smell something burning.

I have always planned to install some sort of video camera and knew that they had to be a cheaper option than the Marine branded ones for $400+. What about truck reversing cameras? Bingo.
Even if they coat their zinc products in Chrome, IMHO they are still crap. On some of their zinc plated products you used to see "for freshwater use only", I haven't seen that for a while. You will recognize these products by their acne like appearance. Here are the examples on your standard Whitby/Brewer interior doors.

And these horrendous devices aren't cheap. The one above has a retail price of $107, even though you can get it online from $65.
I spend a lot of time looking for a replacement and finally found one. Its also not cheap, the brass version is $120.
This is a quote from the Fastnet Race Disaster of 1979.

"‘Lethal missiles; Of the 303 yachts that started the ’79 Fastnet, 112 reported
knockdowns, 77 of which were B2 knockdowns, ones in which the mast is
substantially below horizontal, the yacht inverts or undergoes a full
360-degree roll. The inquiry into the disaster reported: ‘In several
boats, cookers and batteries fell out of their mountings. Both items are
potentially lethal missiles.’ On his Fastnet ’79 experience, Matt added: ‘Dangers below are frequently ignored. One of the biggest problems aboard Grimalkin
during the height of the storm was how objects broke loose. Each time
the yacht suffered a knockdown, tins of food and other heavy objects
were flying around the saloon. When Grimalkin was recovered,
one of the lead acid batteries, which had been secured under the
companionway steps, was found wedged in the yacht’s bow. This deadly
missile had taken away part of the main bulkhead during one of our
pitchpoles.’"
I spent the last two months in Portugal and Spain walking the Camino Portuguese from Lisbon (360 miles). I'm now back in a sweltering Miami, wondering why.
This is just a placeholder for work on the saloon setee/bunk. The great thing about a looooonnng boat refit is that you get to redo your original work. My motto for the Marine business is "We do it right because we do it twice."
Is there anyone out there with a CQR anchor still hanging off their bow roller? If so its time to put it in the same box as your plastic sextant, Radio Direction Finder and your Kapok lifejacket. If your boat drags and hits me, we can work things out, $hit happens. If, however, you were using a CQR or some other antique POS the conversation will be different. I can even live with the Delta and Bruce, even though they are somewhat outdated. There is a whole slew of new generation anchors out there that are so far ahead of their predecessors that it is ridiculous. My favorites are the Rocna and Manson, and I have no objection to the other variants of the design. My recent experience with the Spade anchor was outstanding. It set fast and held solid, sort of what you need in an anchor.

http://svmysticeti.com/?p=119

I had planned to do this for some time but it was on the nice to do list. Then one of the ballasts began to give out. I have a spare ballast but the installation was above my pay grade.

John's article is excellent so I won't repeat it here. Suffice to say that I took the "non-soldering" route with components from 1000bulbs.com. My solution was more expensive but any failed components can simply be popped out and replaced. Unit cost of the LED upgrade is approx $30. Labor, as usual, is about $0.01 per hour. Power usage should be approx .3 amps on white and .25amps on red.

I really like the Alpenglow company and I have no doubt that their upgrade would be better quality, but hey, I'm a sailor. I would certainly recommend their new LED fittings as an initial installation.
The forward cross bar will obviously be removed. I know it's not to everyone's taste but it ties in with my no teak on deck concept. Existing forward hatch shown for comparison. That will also be replaced with a sliding Perspex hatch.
Greg
the carpenter has started on the aft bunk and aft heads. I manned a
stand at the Pompano flea market and took many of my failed projects to
sell. Tragically I seem to have come back with more stuff than I took
up. I do think that my $1 boat buck Cruising Chute is a winner. This
was its first time out of its bag in 20+ years. Finally, as we have all
come to learn to our cost, there are many clowns working in the boat
business. Marge from my marina, however, at least is an actual clown
and does excellent upholstery on the side.
I had a painter lined up for the deck but it was a no go. I let him loose below decks and he did a great job, except for the dust.

I must admit I now prefer Interlux paint for this work instead of Pettit I had used in the aft cabin on the previous occasion.
One that would pull all the various threads seamlessly together. If I had spent the time that I have wasted on this quest, working on the boat, I would probably be finished by now.

And suddenly I stumbled across; TRELLO

It works on a web browser, iPad, iPhone and Android. Check it out.

Full disclosure, I sell these things in West Marine. I got a loan of one from the company for my recent Transatlantic along with a paid subscription (Extreme Plan).

But, that said, I love this device.

In case anyone has been living in a cave for the last 20 years, communications when going offshore on a SMALL boat falls into two categories;

SSB Radio.

Some sort of Satellite communications.

SSB Radio, for those willing to invest the time, money and effort is still the gold standard, IMHO.

For satellite communications you have three main options;

Satellite phone

Transmit only txt and position messages - e.g. Spot.

Transmit and Receive txt and position messages- e.g. inReach

Satellite phone;
I have been on a number of long sailing trips with satellite phones and my experience with them has been universally horrible. They are expensive to buy, talk time is expensive, data download is a joke, they have no tracking ability etc. Their use in a chaotic abandon ship situation is very questionable.

Spot;
Spot is fine and I really have no issue with it, except that it is a transmit only device. You have no idea if your messages are getting through.

inReach;
This device performed flawlessly on my recent trip. There is a bit of a learning curve setting up the system but their help desk is outstanding. It tracked our journey across the Atlantic and I was able to send txt messages from my iPhone to the device via bluetooth. The only issue was to convince my wife and friends that they could simply reply with a txt message. I was able to receive news txt messages about the US presidential campaign while in Mid-Atlantic (which is the only downside I encountered with the device). In conjunction with an Epirb it would be an outstanding safety device.

Costs; The device costs $300 (SE Version). For someone just doing the snowbird Bahamas and the East coast US the “Freedom plan” would suffice. This carries an annual fee of $24.95, but you only pay for months you need. With all their plans “Preset messages” are unlimited. You no longer have to seek out a wifi signal to let people know that you are safe and well. On the cheaper plans, with limited txt messaging, if the poop hits the fan 50cents a txt message would be the least of your worries.

As I say in my sales pitch, you absolutely DO NOT need any of these devices. If, however, you are looking at a sat phone, you need to investigate the inReach.
Bermuda and the Azores ending in Gibraltar. This is a major bucket list
item for me and I'm staying off ladders and trying to avoid driving in
Miami until we set sail. As with all major sailing trips, after three
days out, I'm sure I'll be asking what the hell I was thinking when I
signed on.
If it looks like
something from an assisted living facility, that is exactly what it is.
I don't know about you spry young sailors but for me
moving around the boat in a seaway gets more exciting every year.

Starting to think about the Cap Rail (Toe Rail, gunwale). It will not be teak. Two reasons,

a: expense,
b: maintenance.

I know it can be epoxied and painted but at some stage that will have to be redone. That also sort of defects the idea of using teak in the first place.

I've looked at Plasteak lumber and it is promising but then came across this;

Ameriteak Marine Toe Rails - Gunnels

So far it look very good. I have installed a section and will play with it for a while
